Alexandra Schmitz has been selected as a recipient of the 2009-2010 Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship. This award, funded through The Comcast Foundation,
recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for commitment
to community service, academic achievement, and demonstrated
leadership. Recipients receive a on-time grant of $1,000.
The Children's Defense Fund has awarded Edwin Rosas and Kia Lor as honorees of the 2009 Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Minesota's Beat the Odds® Awards. They each will be honored at at dinner and awarded a $9,000 scholarship towards future educational expenses! Fee Moua and Mohad Mohamed won the 2008 National Horatio Alger Scholarship.
They each will receive a total of $20,000 in scholarship funds and a
five day all expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. over their spring
break in April. They are the only two winners in the entire state of
Minnesota. JHS has never had a student win the National Hoario Alger
scholarship before. Both students were shocked when they heard the good
news!!! Mahad and Fee both had very compelling stories and spent a lot
of time working on them. Fee Moua also won the Optimist Scholarship.
JUST ANNOUNCED: The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguised Americans has selected 4 JHS students as 2009 Horatio Alger Minnesota Scholars. Those students are Pang K. Lor, Krisna Nhul, Sterling W. Nichols, and Mai T. Xiong.
The Horation Alger Association seeks to recognize those students who
show evidence of integrity and perseverance in the face of adversity.
They will learn what they will be awarded later in the spring. What a
huge honor to have Johnson High School students chosen two years in a
row!!! 1994 JHS Graduate, Na Eng,
won an Emmy Award Dec. 3, 2008. Her winning piece was on state tax
policies that hurt the working poor in Alabama - it was nominated in
the Business and Financial Reporting category. At Johnson she was the
Courier Editor, National Honor Society President, and winner of the
Liberty Award.

Chris Nelson, Social Studies teacher at Johnson High School, has been named the Saint Paul City Conference Coach of the Year for Soccer for 2008!

Homecoming week 2008 the Peltier Family was inducted into the Hall of Fame. It was a wonderful celebration recognizing a very special family. Below is a great article from The Eastside Review written by another Johnson High School Hall of Fame inductee, Wally Wakefield.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named Joe Benert a Commended Student in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students place among the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students nation wide that entered the 2009 competition. "The young people named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their stron performance in this highly competitive program."
Over The Summer 2008: Four students from Johnson High School, Jayvin Miller-Murphy, Pang Lor, Sompos Nhul and Arthur Nguyen worked raising money for the homeless people in St. Paul. All four students spent over 300 hours on this project and they did an excellent job. The final total will be around 20K. The proceeds will be going to stock the Catholic Charities food shelves here on the eastside of St. Paul. They were featured in a Pioneer Press article and a Channel 9 feature in July. We are very proud of these JHS Students!
